Case #2

CITY

Background:

SPONSORED TREE SALE AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPO
· By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

For the last two d~cades Ramsey has sponsored a tree sale for its residents; this year will be the
21st year. This will be the seventh year an environmental education component has been held in
conjunction with ge tree sale.

Observation:

The purpose of this case is to provide an oppommity for the Commission to comment on the 1995
Tree Sale and ExgO. A continuing goal of the City has been to encourage citizen participation in
activities such as the Expo.

This year, the event will be organized almost entirely by volunteers consisting of Paul Couture and
his Tree Committ~ associates, the PTA and others involved with the Ramsey Elementary School.
City involvement ~ill be primarily limited to contacting the nurseries invited for the tree sale and
ordering the DNR ~geedlings for dissemination to residents.

The Tree Sale an~ Expo will be held at the Ramsey Elementary School; the last five years both
events were held a~: City Hall. The Tree Sale has been conducted at the Municipal Center since it
inception.

As a Tree City US~A city, Ramsey is required to conduct an Arbor Day ceremony. If needed, this
could occur at the Elementary School; however, the Ramsey Garden Club has expressed an interest
in having a ceremony at Emerald Pond Park. This would also call attention to the club's
beautification proj~t there and the Spring Small Business Administration tree planting project also
in the park and adjt~ining neighborhood.

Enclosed for your ~formation is a draft Ramsey Resident Newsletter article.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed By:

Parks/Utilities SuParvimr

P&R: 2/9/95

/kaj

Copies Also Distributed To:

Mayor and Council
City Administrator
Environmental Specialist
