Case #2

SUNFISH LAKE DISTRICT PLANNING
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Background:

The purpose of this case is to project the park, open space and trail connections residents in the
Sunfish Lake Re0:eafion District will need in the future. Because of the area's continued growth,
buildable undevelpped parcels am few. Now may be a critical time in identifying what public
spaces will be ne0ded.

Included with this agenda packet is an l l"x17" map of the Park and Trail Plan that the
Commlssmn finalized earlier this year. The plan may resemble the ultimate desires for the Sunfish
Lake District. Th~ only area where the plan may not represent Commission discussions is in the
center of the dis~ct, east of the lake. The dotted yellow line re_presenting an urban off-road trail
was placed at this tlocation by City Council so as not to imply condemnation of lake shore property
for a trail corddo~ The Commission, you will recall, felt that lake experiences similar to those in
Minneapolis would eventually be very important to the community - especially in this urban
setting.

As stated in the December I, 1995, memorandum, 444 household currently exist within the
district, with 589 persons under the age of 18. The subdivisions the Commission will review in
December containlapproximately 246 new dwellings for a minimum of an additional 319 youths
(246 x 1.3). Buy out dwelling units will be approximately 98I units with over 1,275 young
people at any onetime. '

At the December meeting, the Commission will be asked to review:

· Th~ recreation distinctions to determine if public spaces currently planned am
adj.~, uate to meet the demand of Sunfish Lake District's eventual 3,237 residents
(98!1 dwelling units x 3.3)
· WOuld a roadway pedestrian route adjacent to County Roads #5 and #57 be
ade gluate to serve pedestrian north/south travel? Are there enough off-roadway
tra~ el routes (35 foot corridors)?
· Are there enough mst points along whatever travel routes are determined to provide
cot/tfortable pedeswian travel within the district?
· Is tlhere enough green space? (Whether or not its publicly accessible for recreation.)
· Wil them be safe crossing points at 153rd Avenue N.W. and Sunwood Drive's
jun~. ture with County Road #5 and//57?

Upon a general diSCussion of the Sunfish Lake District and adjoining destinations, the Commission
may be able to better define specific needs of Cases 3, 4, 6, and 7.

Attached for your i~formation is the Sunfish Lake Recreation District map and a vicinity map.
Commission Action:

Determine general park, trail and open space needs of the district.
Reviewed By:

Parks/Utilities Supervisor

P&R: 12/14/95

/kas
