deve%o~mental disabilities often need a variety of support <br />services to foster independence and participation in their <br />communities. <br /> <br />Family ~members who have a loved one with a developmental <br />disability experience inordinate amounts of stress related <br />to the unique challenges involved in raising someone with <br />specialI needs. Often times these stress factors are caused <br />by complicated service systems, unresponsive bureaucracies, <br />limite~ support services and discrimination. Additionally, <br />there a~re a number of public policy issues which impact the <br />rights bf and quality of life for people who have <br />developmental disabilities. <br /> <br />These i~clude the budget crisis being faced by Federal, <br />State, County, local governments and school districts; <br />developing and implementing a managed health care program; <br />extensiUe waiting lists for housing services; increasing <br />number of people who have developmental disabilities; <br />implementing the Regional Treatment Center downsizing <br />processj and promoting state-of-the-art practices in the <br />employment, day habilitation and education fields. <br /> <br />Throughthe comprehensive approach outlined, all of these <br />needs will be addressed directly or indirectly and an impact <br />will belmade on individuals, service systems and <br />communities. It is felt that all parties will benefit from <br />these services. <br /> <br />3. Anticipated Results mhd Goals <br /> <br />This project has two primary goals: <br /> <br />1. To increase community opportunities and services for <br />people who have developmental disabilities and to <br />foster more inclusive communities. <br /> <br />2. ~To empower people who have developmental <br />disabilities and their families, so they can <br />effectively cope with stress and discrimination, obtain <br />a better quality of life and become participating <br />members of our communities. <br /> <br />Objective 1: To improve community planning efforts and <br />community responsiveness so that appropriate services are <br />available to people who have developmental disabilities. <br /> <br />Performance Measures: <br />A) A c~unty wide review of housing options for people with <br />developmental disabilities shall indicate that additional <br />resources have been developed. <br /> <br /> <br />
