CASE
REPORT PROBLEMS

ON DIAGNOSIS OF TL990 COMPUTER
By: Jessie Hart, Finance Officer

Background:

On March 22,, 19,94 the City Council authorized having MASYS Corporation come in and diagnose
the "lock-up' prbblems being experienced by the Police Department on the TI990 computer
system. It wa~--SriginEly thought the problem was being caused by the TI931 terminals and
keyboards that w. ;r¢ connected.

On Tuesday, Apz il 5, 1994, a representative from-MASYS Corporation performed numerous tests
and diagnostics )n the TI990 computer system. While the tests were somewhat inconclusive
because no fallur ~ was detected, the tests showed that the hardware (disk drive and cona'oller) and'
the central proee:~sing unit are in working order and functioning properly. It was found that there
existed a memo~ problem when all terminals, TI931 and PC types, were logged ,,o,n. Th,e,
representative fr~m MASYS believes that this memory shortage is the cause of the lock-up'
situations. Pleasdrefer to the attached letter from John Humphrey of MASYS Corporation.

To prove this theory, MASYS has installed a new memory board which virtually doubles the
memory on the s~stem. This board will be left in place for 60 days to test the theory. After 60
days, if the lock-op problem has not returned, MASYS will sell us the memory upgrade board for
$500.00.

Since it is currefl, tly unknown where the State of Minnesota is going with their systems and the
languages and o]~erafing systems they will be using, it would be a wise investment to retain the
memory upgrade!if it indeed solves the problems encountered.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommences that if the memory shortage is the cause of the problems being encountered and
the memory up,adc solves the problem, that authorization be issued to purchase the memory
upgrade bo~d fo? $500.00 from MASYS Corporation.
Committee Action:

Recommend Cotmcil approval to purchase upgraded memory board from MASYS Corporation for
$500.00 pending!the outcome of the 60 day test period.

Reviewed By:.

City Arlmirfistrat~r
Finance Officer
Police Chief

FC: 4/26/94
