CASE #

CONSIDERATION OF BUDGET AMENDMENT FOR THE PURCHASE OF
TWENTY-FI[VE REPLACEMENT HELMETS FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
By: Jessie L. Hart, Finance Officer

Background:

The Fire Board met on Wednesday, August 17, 1994, and added to their agenda that evening a
request to replacE the existing helmets that the fire fighters currently wear. It was brought to the
attention of the Bbard by the Fire Chief that, while these helmets were one of the best when they
were originally p~rchased, they are no longer legal, do not meet OSHA standards, and have no
structural integrit~when battling enclosed structure fires.

Replacement of the helmets was not requested in the 1994 Adopted Budget, nor in the 1995
Proposed Budgetg Therefore, the Fire Board is recommending that this request, 25 helmets at a
cost of $100 each ($85 helmet; $15 reflective lettering), or a total cost not-to-exceed $2,500, be
considered by thelFinance Committee as a 1994 budget amendment.

Due to the dollar~, generated in the building area, there appears to be sufficient dollars to allow for
an increase of $2,500 to line item #42261-2220 for the purpose of acquiring 25 helmets for the fire
department.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends Committee approval of the purchase of 25 replacement helmets at a cost not-to-
exceed $2,500 thrbugh the adoption of the attached resolution.

Committee Action: ..

Motion to recon~ end City Council adopt the Resolution Authorizing a Budget Amendment for the
Purchase of Twen;ty-Five Replacement Helmets for the Fire Department.

Reviewed By:

City Administrator
Finance Officer
Fire Chief

FC: 09/12/94
