iC. The City should work toward and encourage planting trees as visual screening
barriers, particularly along highways. Continuation of the tree planting/beautification programs
associated wit~ the business and volunteer conmmnity of Ramsey is one avenue that accomodates
tree establishment and provides additional education and exposure. ~..

3. EDUCATION AND STEWARDSHIP

:A. The City should encourage a wide variety of planting species in order to avoid
monocroppingi City plantings should reflect this policy. Additionally, information and incentives
when necessary should be available for homeowners and developers.

B. Encouragement of alternative methods of planting and maintaining yards such
as use of wood, chip mulch, native ground cover, naturalized landscapes, and gardens modeled after
native plant communities should be a priority for the City. This would decrease use of lawn
chemic:ds, mu.hicipal water, fuel for lawn mowing, and associated noise, water and air pollution.

.;C. Emphasis should be placed on community utilization of wood from removed
trees for fuel, nmlch, lumber, etc. Increased utilization of organic wastes (eg woodchips, lawn
clippings, leave:s, food wastes) reduces the costs of transport and disposal while helping to build a
more sustainable community.

~D. All disease-free City tree removals shall be utilized.

E. The City should continue to support and ensure an annual Arbor Day
celebration.
~F. Use of cost sharing programs which give priority to projects using native
species which ~tre best adapted is important.
