INTRODUCTION

An urban forestry progra~ can provide ser%,ices such as
recomme~da=ion of planting materials for homeowners, commercial
areas, land city parks; answering calls ~rom homeowners about
various tree and shrub problems; working with developers and
builder~ to minimize construction damage to trees. The
e~ecti~eness of these seN, ices can be improved with the knowledge
of the ~verall cover type of %he city. This report provides this
information.

The Cit~ of Ramsey encompasses 28.82 square males or 18,449.!1
acres according to the 1979 report. Total wooded acres is 4726.56
acres om 25.61 percent of the ci=y. This report examines areas
covered ~ith trees, including rural and residential. This report
assumes ~hat the ~orest cover in each type is nol-mal!y distributed.

Aerial photos were used ~or the initial delineation of the city.
Sine typ~s were identified: vacant, water, primarily Red Oaks,
primaril~ Bur Oaks, mixed tree species, scrub oaks, not oaks,
bottomla~d species,- and Spruce/Pine. Using this information the
number a~d percent of acres of each type was calculated (excluding
vacant a~d water,) see Table I.

Aerial phptos provide valuable info~-mation which we ~urther used to
conduct a~cround check. Using stratified random sa~p!ing increased
accuracy i(',/- 10% at 80% confidence level) since there is knowledge
about thei population. In sa~p!ing, we set up strata according to
the majo~ ~orest t~pes, made separate sa/~ple estimates Jot each
rype, then~combined the r.vpe data to give an estimate ~or the entire
PoPulation.

The boundaries and total acreage of each type are )Lnown. using
propo_-tio~a! allocation the number of saddles taken ~or each typ_e
is made e~.ua! ~o the propor~ion cf all ~its in the Dopu!ation
which ~a!~ in that u.vpe. The total number of plots taken were 30.
The data ~rom these points were e~trapoiated to estimate the tree
~DoDu!ation. and characteristics ~or the cover t.~pes

Each cover ~.vpe was proportionally inventoried for regeneration,
see Table ~77 Two of the cover z~vpes, s~=uuD oak and not oak, were
inventorie~d. ~or receneration.~ The area encompassed~ by these tvDes._
are vo~ung ~thus~ an area of receneration, is not possible =~ this
time. The %able lists the prima~-y tree species and'the total n~ber
of stems ~¢ounted. !n addition to the primar~ tree species,
understo_~y'sDecies were recorded but,~ere not tallied.

Kunde Co.~ inc. - Consulting Foresters

2
