Lake Itasca Trail iConnection

Several years ago North Fork Inc. donated the 35' foot by 1400' foot corridor this trail
connection would use. City forces would clear and prepare the trail for class 5 and bituminous
by a contractor. This project has been identified within the CIP as an $19,500 expense to be paid
by Trail Fees. The estimated cost for the 1391' feet of paving may be as much as $22,256. Staff
recommends that. this amount be approved in the event it does cost $16 per foot to construct.
The construction Could occur this November, but more likely early spring.

Annual/zed Maiqtenance expenses: Because of the brushing and mowing activity that is
currently occurring now, the regular maintenance expenses may be the same or even
less with bituminous vs. a dirt trail.
A l-inch overlay can be expected at a 10 to 15 year interval, at approximately $1.80 a
lineal foot, for an amortized cost of about $208 per year.

Finance Committee Action:

Motion to recommend City Council authorize staff to prepare plans and specifications for
shelters and irrigation at Flintwood Terrace Park and approve $22,256 from Trail Fees for the
construction of a bituminous trail from 164th Lane to the Lake Itasca Boardwalk.

Reviewed by:
Parks/Utilities Supervisor
Director of Public,Works
Finance Officer
City Engineers

Copies to:
Park and Recreation Commission

FC: 10/28/03
