This
settlement became a town in 1857, and was originally named "Water-Town", for its location
between the Rum and Mississippi Rivers. One year later, in November 1858, the town was
renamed Ramsey in honor of Alexander Ramsey, who served as the first governor of the
Minnesota Territories from 1849 to 1853. Alexander Ramsey was also Minnesota's second
governor serving from 1860 to 1863.

The City of Ramsey is located on the northwest corner of Anoka County. The City has a rich and
interesting history that includes a period when it contained the first permanent settlement in
the area. Although nothing remains to remind present generations of the almost forgotten
original settlement of Itasca, located on the southwest corner of today's City boundary, Ramsey
was once considered a contender for the Minnesota territorial capital. The City's near brush
with fame is a well known fact to people interested in local history. In the more than 135 years
of history, Ramsey has many times been on the verge of developing into an urban center and this
has never been more evident than at the present. Industry, commercial development, and
considerable residential development have occurred during the past years and trends indicate
that such growth will continue. It's proximity to railroad, highways and two rivers make it a
desirable place for future growth. In recent history, Ramsey Township, established in 1884,
became a City in 1974.
