PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF RAMSEY <br /> <br />Ramsey is located in northwestern Anoka County. The City has a population of 12,717. The <br />population has grown nearly 500% between the 1970 census and an April, 1989 estimated <br />population count. The City is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the state. Ramsey, <br />located 25 miles north of Minneapolis, is located on U.S. Highway ¢10. Highway #10 is a <br />component of the national highway system and offers excellent access to both metropolitan <br />centers and resort areas on the State's many lakes. The Mississippi River forms the southern <br />boundary of the City and the Rum River forms the eastern boundary. There are approximately <br />20,480 acres in the City which includes a variety of topography ranging from wetlands and <br />streams to prairie areas and wooded areas. Rolling hills define the landscape of Ramsey ranging <br />in elevations from 850 to 900 feel above sea level. Ramsey is home to several lakes; the most <br />significant ones being Sunfish, Itasca, and Eddy Lakes. Trott Brook, a scenic stream with a <br />planned trail system, and part of the City's storm drainage system, flows easterly across the <br />northern part of the City. <br /> <br />NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> <br />The area of Ramsey contains a number of high quality natural resources including: soils, <br />forests, lakes, and two rivers; the Rum and Mississippi. The tree cover is made up of mature <br />coniferous and deciduous trees such as pine and oak, respectively. <br /> <br />CLIMATE <br /> <br />Ramsey is located in a humid continental climale zone. A variation in seasonal temperatures is <br />normal for this area. The average temperature ranges from 72.3 degrees Fahrenheit in <br />summer to 12.35 degrees Fahrenheit in winter. January is the coldest month with a mean daily <br />maximum temperature of 22.4 degrees Fahrenheit and mean daily minimum temperature of 2.3 <br />degrees Fahrenheit, July is the hottest month having a mean daily maximum of 83.9 degrees <br />Fahrenheit. The mean annual temperature is 42.33 degrees Fahrenheit. The days between <br />killing frost is t69. The average annual snow fall is 142..~-inches. The average days reaching <br />above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature in Ramsey is 14 days along with an annual <br />precipitation of 24.7 inches. <br /> <br />WATER RESOURCES <br /> <br />Several developments in the southeast corner of the City are served by municipal water. The <br />City has a 500,000 gallon storage facility that services the southeast corner of the City. <br />Currently the City has two wells that tap the Ironton-Galesville aquifer. The quality of this <br />water meets the standards of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Department of <br />Health. The pumping capacity of these wells is 850 gallons per minute. The daily average <br />demand is 45,089 gallons per day with a peak demand of 132,000 gallons per day, and total tap <br />water hardness is 210 parts per million. The Mississippi River and the Rum River flow <br />through the City forming the east and southern boundaries respectively. <br /> <br />LAND USE <br /> <br />The City of Ramsey is a young community with room and accommodations for a diverse range of <br />development opportunities. In accordance with the 1976 Metropolitan Land Planning Act <br />(MLPA), the City of Ramsey completed a Comprehensive Plan in July, 1980. The City has since <br />updated and revised the Plan to remain harmonious with concerns for municipal and regional <br />growth. <br /> <br />The City has a seven member Planning and Zoning Commission that was established by City <br />Council. Ordinances for zoning and subdivisions as well as the annual updating of the Capital <br /> <br /> <br />
