The aluminum recycling industry is expand±ng rapidly which has
created the need for a second furnace at the Permit Holders' facility.
Therefore, the Permit ·Holder petitions the City of Ramses' to operate
two melt furnaces at its existing facility to satisfy these needs.

SECOND MELT ~ACE

A second melt furnace has been erected at the Permit Holders
facility. This furnace is 7 ft in diameter by 9 ft long and is.
designed to recover an average of 600 lbs per hour of aluminum. Four
propane burners supply heat to the system. The furnace flue gases were
directed to the above W.W. Sly Baghouse.

This furnace was put into operation on August 10 and the Shaffer
furnace was shut down to comply with the CUP requiremen~ and for
maintenance.

Table 1 summarizes the potential criteria pollutants that would
be emitted to the atmosphere with both furnaces in operation producing
an average of 1000 lbs per hour of aluminum for 24 hrs per day, 365
days per year with no pollution control device. This data was
calculated from the emission factor listings in the publication EPA
450/4-90-003. Each emission is considerably less than the 25 tons per
year allowed by the MPCA for an exempt status. The total maximum
potential is 19.8 tons per year for all of the pollutants which is
substantially less than allowablef Therefore, the facility will retain
its exemption from requiring an air emission permit and shall be in
compliance with MPCA regulations. We will be submitting this
information to the MPCA in our application to operate two melt
furnaces.

EMISSION CONTROL

An afterburner will be installed at each furnace to consume the
organic compounds (smoke) before they exit the stack. This will assure
opacity and odor control to within MPCA requirements. This alternative
was selected to reduce the risk of fire from the W.W. Sly Baghouse~
However, the baghouse will be retained-on site and used in the event
that the afterburners are' not in service.
