Additional state law requirements <br />Cities must also draft their zoning ordinances to meet the requirements of <br />state law outside of the Municipal Planning Act. The following is not a <br />comprehensive list of state laws that effect city zoning, but discusses some <br />of the most common limitations of city zoning authority. <br />a) Flood plains, shoreland and wild and scenic rivers <br />Some land is subject to special protection under state law because it contains <br />important natural resources, such as lakes and rivers. Cities are generally <br />required to adopt standards for development of these types of land areas that <br />meet established state standards.
