Councilmember Olson stated skate boarding is not a recent phenomenon, it has been around for a <br />long time. <br />Councilmember John Dehen asked what the elevation of the sliding hill at Alpine Park was. <br />ParksSupervisor Riverblood stated the run is fairly long and it goes from the top of the hill to the <br />wetland area (160 feet). He stated they plan on putting in some pine trees up there for aesthetics <br />along with a light for the sledders. He stated they were talking about putting in a parking area in <br />that area anyways because parents do not want to walk all the way from the current parking lot to <br />the sliding hill. <br />Chairperson Johns indicated $75,000 will get them started on the park improvements. They will <br />also need to phase in the future improvements to Alpine Park over a number of years. <br />Case #3:Joint City Council Commission Discussion <br />Update on Mississippi River Trail <br />ParksRiverblood updated the Council and Commission on the Mississippi Trail improvements <br />and connections. <br />Mayor Gamec asked why they considered the wayside rest as a City facility instead of a MnDot <br />facility. <br />ParksSupervisor Riverblood indicated it was a mapping error. <br />ParksSupervisor Riverblood indicated what is coming to the forefront is the Mississippi River <br />Trail. He stated there have been a number of States and organizations building trails along the <br />river and they are fairly close to a continuous trail from the headwaters of the Mississippi to New <br />Orleans, in part due to all of the negative things that have happened in New Orleans, President <br />Bush’s Administration has announced that they want to see a continuous trail from New Orleans <br />to the Headwaters so there is actually money expectedtorise tothe forefront. <br />Linking the City of Anoka to Ramsey through Kings Island <br />ParksSupervisor Riverblood stated this has been worked on for nearly ten years and it was <br />considered medium priority and are now a high priority project when the monies come through. <br />Chairperson Johns wondered if that was because they already have plans in place. <br />ParksSupervisor Riverblood indicated that was correct. He stated they havenine out often <br />points that relate to this segment. <br />Chairperson Johns stated her husband is an avid biker and having a trail like that would be great <br />where anyone couldhop on and ride down to different cities. <br />Park and Recreation Commission/June 14, 2007 <br />Page 4of 6 <br />
