R, D. SJOGREN, Ph.D.
D~reclor

METROPOLITAN MOSQ UI TO CONTROL DISTRICT
2380 WYCLIFF STREET "ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA 55114 · 612-645-9149

w. J. CAESAR
Business Adrnin.

March 1, 1989

Jim Gr omberg
City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Blvd NW
Ramsey, MN 55303

Dear Mr. Gromberg:

This letter is to summarize our telephone conversation of
March 1.

Waste tires are an important breeding location for Aedes
_tLi~~L~ (Tree hole mosquito), the mosquito that can
transmit LaCrosse encephalitis, a disease of children. In
order for this mosquito to use tires for breeding sites, the
tires must hold water, and be located in a shaded area. ~
Tires stored dry (indoors), or in full sunlight are not
suitable breeding sites for this mosquito. Adult Tree hole
mosquitoes seldom travel more than 1/2 mile from where they
developed.

I have enclosed information on B.T.I. as you requested. This
mosquito larvicide has been used in other parts of the
country to control mosquitoes in tire dumps. However, the
Metropolitan Mosquito Control Distrct does not regularly
conduct this form of control in tire dumps. We work with
local and state government to have the tires removed and
disposed of properly. If this is not feasible, we consult
with the property owners on ways to minimize mosquito
production by moving tires into sunlight, reducing shade by
removing brush, or storing the tires where they will not
collect rain water. We also monitor the sites on a regular
basis to determine their mosquito population status.

I have also enclosed general information on LaCrosse
encephalitis and its prevention.. If you have any questions,
please call me at 645-9149.

Sincerely,

David Neitzet
LaCrosse Encephalitis Prevention
Program Leader

MEMBER--AMERICAN MOSOUITO CONTROL ASSOCIATION
