PURCF~kSE OF TREES FOR CITY
By: Merland Otto

Background:

Dave Hartley and I each received calls from Henry Sandbu!te fro~
Noble Nursery on August 16 regarding the City's interest in
purchasing trees. Attached is a letter and flyer from Mr.
Sandbulte indicating the size and cost of trees which are available
this fall at greatly reduced sale prices (e.g. 2-1/2 to 4" trees
for $90.00).

The Parks Commission has requested in the 1990 budget $18,500 for
landscaping at Central and Autumn Heights Parks. While the budget
has not yet been approved, there is a continuing demand for trees
at city Parks As a means of comparison, recent bids on pl2~
material in this size range have been $225.00 to $375.00. '"

This offer represents an opportunity to achieve substantially more
"bang for the buck" than we otherwise are able to achieve.

Observation:

Merland Otto will develop a conceptual planting plan for Central
Park and dete~.ine the number of trees which the City could use
this fall in the park system. This will be available at your
meeting.

Staff Recommendation:

Allocate an amount not to exceed the purchase price of 100 trees
($9,000.00) plus tax.

council Action:
Will be based on your discussicn. A resolution providing for such
purchase should Council deter~ine to proceed v~ill be available at
your meeting.

Review Checklist:

City Administratcr
City Attorney
City Engineer
Community Development Dir.

Chief of Police
Finance Officer
Public Works Supt.
Other

X
X
