City of Ramsey

15153 NOWTHEN BOULEVARD N.W., RAMSEY, MINNESOTA 55303

(612) 427-1410

September 121, 1989

Senator Greg Dahl
Room 111, State Capitol
St. Paul, MN 55155

RE: State Highway #47

Dear Senator Dahl:

As you may be aware, State Highway #47 passes through our community from our southern boundary to our
northern boundary and serves as one of four primary north/south transportation systems for the Northern
Metropolitan Area; the others are U.S. Highway #169, State Highway #65, and Interstate #35. The City of Ramsey
and other governmental units have recognized the importance of transportation within the Northern Metropolitan
Area and have clearly identified State Highway g47 as one of the "weak links". The reason for this "weak link"
status is the alignment of State Highway #47 and it's physical condition. The long range solution, naturally, is a
different alignment of State Highway #47, which has been suggested by Anoka County and its Comprehensive
Transportation Plan. However, short term solutions and a need to address a severe safety problem exist today.

Much can be done to improve upon the safety characteristics of State Highway #47 before new alignment
opportunities can be pursued. These improvements can and should include:

· Improved surface maintenance
· Frequent striping (needed because of limited shoulder width; in some cases the shoulder does not exist)
· Cross-walk designation where pedestrian crossing is predominant
· Signalization at the intersection of County Road #116 and State Highway g47
· Right-of-way cleating to improve upon visibility, particularly in the area of 153rd Avenue N.W.

The enclosed letter is being sent to the Department of Transportation. It is my hope that you will follow this matter
and assist the State Highway ~47 communities, the Northern Metropolitan Area, and the County of Ano 'ka in its
efforts to obtain funding to improve and ultimately realign State Highway g47.

Very Truly Yours,

CITY OF RAMSEY

Gary R.
