Case

Background'

PURCHASE OF ADDITIONAL COMPUTER
By: David R. Harlley, City Administrator

Since the addition ct stand-alone workstations on a common network, the data processing and
word processing functions of the City have improved significantly. As we face the tasks before
us, we see inlensive use o! these syslems to just get the job done. Keeping track of development
rights alone could not be accomplished withoul the aid of a good data base.

In addition 1o the heavy word processing and data processing use of our compulers, we have
begun to use electronic mail as a way Io speed communication and improve on efficient use of
time. The use of electronic mail and the ability to transfer files from one location to another
have resulted in a far more efficient office. However, to fully utilize these tools, we need to
provide access to key people in addition to support staff. To do this, it is proposed that the City
purchase five additional workstations under the State of Minnesota Contract. The workstations
would be Macintosh SE/30 with 40 MB Hard Disk for a price of $3,008.00 each. Cables and
nelwork sollware would cost approximalely $230.00 each for a total per unit cost of
$3,238.00. These workstalions would provide access to Community Development Director
Mark Banwart, Finance Officer Sandra Ashley, Chief of Police Mike Auspos, Fire Chief Bruce
Hoeke, and Assessor John Keefe. Additionally, this would free up the use of an IBM-AT computer
which could be used by Bruce Bacon for several projects which he has proposed.

Enclosed for your information is a "Recap of Data Processing Capital Outlay for the Year of
1988 and Year to Date September, 1989".

A proposed resolution authorizing this purchase will be available at the meeting.

Recommendation:

Council Action:

Motion to:
Adopl Resolution #89-10-__ authorizing the purchase of five workstations from
State Contracl C-405(5) with Apple Computer, Inc.

Review Checklist:

City Administrator X
City Atlorney ...
City Engineer
Community Development Director

Chief of Police
Finance Officer
Planning & Zoning Comm.
Park & Recreation Comm.

??
