CASE MISSISSIPPI TRAIL CORRIDOR UPDATE & REVIEW OF ALTERNATIVE ALIGNMENTS B~: Merland Otto Background: On January 24, 1989 the City Council directed staff to prepare appropriate ordinance amendments and comprehensive plan amendments to assure the right-of-way for developing the Mississippi River Corridor Trail. Since that time, we have prepared a map, met with review agencies, prepared a draft ordinance, and discussed the plan at both P&Z commissions as well as at the Council. The trail map and draft ordinance was submitted for agency review in February. In March, we received review letters from the Metropolitan Council and Anoka County. The consensus the review of agencies regarding the alignment and standards of width for the proposed Mississippi River Trail Corridor was that the proposal meets Regional and County needs. Specific concerns were raised regarding the corridor route through undeveloped land west of Alpac~ Estates. Ron Cox, Park Planner with the Anoka County Department of Parks and Recreation pointed out a number of concerns he had regarding the alignment of the proposed Mississippi River Trial Corridor. In general, Metropolitan Council concurred with Anoka County's assessment of preferred trail corridor alignment. Subsequent revisions were made and presented to Parks and P&Z and to the City Council. Per our latest discussion at the November 14, 1989 meeting we revised the trail plan to show a northern limit for alternative alignments through the area west of Alpaca Estates. We have requested comments from Anoka County and MC on this latest plan. Ron Cox of Anoka County Parks, stated that he had no problem with such a concept. At this time, we have not yet received MC's comments. We do, however, expect to receive their comments prior to the Council meeting.
