APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The Committee directed Sylvia Frolik to research which meeting minutes should be on the next
agenda for approval.

REVIEW CITY COUNCIL UPDATE OF 9/11/02

Sarah Strommen gave a brief summary of Chairperson McDilda's update of the progress of the
Task Force to City Council on 9/11/02.

DISCUSSION OF GRANT FUNDS

Mr. Max stated that the City should be encouraged to apply for grant funds through the Releaf
Program for forestry assessments and management plans.

Mr. Cook suggested that the Committee check with Mr. Boos to make sure the Releaf grant
wouldn't be a duplication of efforts in other grants recently awarded to the City.

Ms. Frolik was instructed to invite Mr. Boos to attend a Task Force meeting in the very near
future to talk about the scope of grants received as it relates to tree inventories.

DISCUSSION OF LANDSCAPING SECTION OF DRAFT TREE ORDINANCE

The Committee summarized the following tasks as necessary to drafting the landscape section of
the draft tree ordinance:

· Prepare lists of preferred, acceptable and undesirable trees.
· Determine desired and appropriate canopy covers for new development.

A brief discussion ensued regarding the value of prairie and native plants also and the fact that
not all areas have to be filled with trees. It was also suggested that the recommended species of
plantings also be rated with respect to attraction of wildlife, and that credit be given for planting
those types of species.

The tree lists referenced above should be available for distribution at the next Environmental
Expo.

The Committee discussed their desire to have a tour of the City park system with Mark Boos;
and perhaps such a tour should be offered to the general public.

It was suggested that the City produce a self-guided map identifying points of interest such as
trails, parks and prairie plantings.

Mr. Max offered to contact Kunde Company regarding possible professional contacts that could
assist the City in establishing some canopy cover guidelines for the landscape section of the tree
ordinance.
