Ramsey before, he established office hours to be sure the concerns of the police officers were
addressed.
Police Chief Way asked how he would work forfeitures into a retainer.
Mr. Peterson stated he assumed that forfeitures were included in the last retainer and if he saw
the volume of forfeitures, he could work it into a retainer.
Mr. Peterson stated he has not done e- processing because Nowthen's volume is so low but he has
worked with e- filing before and can use that process if representing Ramsey.
Any other questions and /or concerns?
Mr. Peterson asked about the deadline for turnaround.
City Administrator Ulrich stated the current contract expires the end of June so the Council will
come to a decision by the first part of June with the prosecutor starting July 1.
Mr. Peterson stated he has worked with Ramsey before, enjoyed it, left for financial reasons, and
would like to come back to help Ramsey out again.
WEIKEL LAW FIRM (Criminal Only)
Describe the backgrounds of the civil and/or prosecuting attorneys who will be assigned to
Ramsey.
Kristi Weikel, owner of the firm, stated she has worked in Ramsey for seven years and is excited
for the opportunity to be sitting at the table tonight.
Lee Martie stated he joined the law firm a year and a half ago and prior to that had his own law
firm. He stated he has experience as a former Assistant Prosecutor for Wright County.
If your firm is not located locally, how do you intend to manage drive time, getting to City Hall
on short notice, would officers be required to come to your office or would you come here for
compliant processing, etc?
Mr. Martie stated with the City's officers doing an excellent job in the field, there will be fewer
contested hearings. He stated he is good at resolving cases to avoid contested hearings. If
scheduled for jury trial, he is also good at resolving cases prior to trial but acknowledges that
there will be some cases that have to be tried. In those cases, he will try to minimize overtime by
scheduling the jury trial so the officer knows when he /she will be testifying.
Mr. Martie stated they do not have accessibility to e- filing but are open to doing so. He
explained they had started e- filing with civil matters but not had the need for criminal e- filing.
But, if they receive the City's prosecution contract, will offer e- filing.
City Council Work Session / May 7, 2013
