Hakanson
Anderson
Assoc.,Inc.

April 19, 1990

Mr. Mark Banwart
City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Blvd. N.W.
Ramsey, MN 55303

Re:

Vertical Control System for
the City of Ramsey

Dear Mr. Banwart:

I have reviewed the status of the benchmark system in the City of
Ramsey and have estimated the cost to upgrade the system as
follows:

Item 1. The latest records show that the City now has 304
benchmarks that have been set and verified at different times since
1983. It is very probable that some of these benchmarks may have
been disturbed or removed since they were set, however, the system
is not very old and the elevations were measured to accuracies
required for a Municipal Vertical Control System. It is my opinion
that the existing system is in reasonably good condition. If it
would be necessary to rerun the level network through the 304
existing benchmarks, balance the network and catalog the data, the
cost would be approximately $14,000.00.

Item 2. There are many platted areas and other areas within the
City where benchmarks are very sparse or do not exist at all. It
is important that the City expand on its existing benchmark system
to include all platted areas. I estimate the cost to establish
benchmarks in the platted areas where there are none at
approximately $8,500.00.

Item 3. A system of 50 permanent benchmarks, set to Mn/DOT
standards, could be established throughout the City. These would
consist of 3/4" sectional alu~inLunrod driven to refusal and capped
with a 3-1/2" diameter friction cap with a City of Ramsey benchmark
designation. The aluminu~ rod comes in 3 foot lengths that are
threaded and are screwed together as they are driven into the
ground. Refusal is driving less than 1 foot per minute using a 70
pound air hammer - usually about 20 feet deep in sandy soils. The
cost to purchase material for 50 monuments from Bernsten Monument
Company ~s as follows:

, ZZZ Monroe Street
Anoka, Minnesota 55303

612/427-5860

Fax 612/427-3401
