location to sell but as the program has been tweaked due to changes in the expo event, it is now
solely the city providing the trees and really is direct competition with the local businesses.
Chairperson Max noted that the alternate option would be to provide the option for the local
nurseries to be involved and potentially bring in additional business.
Associate Planner/Environmental Coordinator Anderson noted that one benefit of the event is
that the City is able to promote indigenous trees that are beneficial and suited for Ramsey.
It was the consensus of the Board for the Subcommittee to speak with the nurseries within
Ramsey to determine their interest in this alternate option for the tree sale.
• Education and Community Awareness Subcommittee
Board Member Lewis provided an update on the Education and Community Awareness
Subcommittee meeting, noting that a vision statement and work plan for the year were
developed. He stated that the Subcommittee would like to encourage a green city concept for the
City. He confirmed that currently Ramsey is a Tree City USA but did not recall seeing that
around the City.
Associate Planner /Environmental Coordinator Anderson confirmed that the issue is not very well
marketed and explained some of the constraints regarding signage. He advised of recognition
within City Hall.
Board Member Lewis stated that perhaps something in terms of signage could be posted to make
residents aware that Ramsey has been a Tree City USA for the past 21 years. He confirmed that
the item could be publicized in the City newsletter, suggesting adding an emblem to the
newsletter and /or City letterhead.
Board Member Stodola stated that the same could be done in regard to the GreenStep Cities
program, if the City moves forward with that item.
Board Member Lewis noted that the Subcommittee also discussed reaching out to civic
organizations within the City, as well as possibly businesses, to increase community awareness.
Chairperson Max noted that another option would be to reach out to churches as stewardship is a
big deal. He thanked everyone for their participation.
Associate Planner/Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated that he can update the website in
the next week or so regarding the Tree City USA status. He advised that he would look into the
option of additional signage and the emblem on the letterhead and/or newsletter.
Board Member Valentine noted that the Subcommittee also discussed options for QCTV and the
newsletter.
• Environmental Expo Subcommittee
No members of the Subcommittee were present.
Environmental Policy Board / December 2, 2013
Page 4 of 6
