If Ramsey could average 70 percent
participation and the pounds per household remained the same, the curbside program would
account for 484 tons of material. To estimate the amount of material the City will recycle with the
curbside program, the formula would be;

I43,540 + ((1.178 * Participation Rate) * 10)) =
2,000

Amount
Recycled in Tons

The 143,540 pounds comes from the amount already recycled for the fn:st two months of 1991.

This figure could also be increased by the promoting of environmentally friendly purchasing
habits. This means the purchasing of products packaged in a way that allows them to be recycled
(i.e. a glass jar of peanut butter instead of a plastic jar). This would increase the amount of
corresponding recyclables for each percent of participation. Making the residents aware of these
ideas can be done through the Ramsey Resident and through direct mailings to all residents.

Recycled Materials

A change in the buying and consuming habits of the residents will also cause a change in the
breakdown of the recycled waste su'eam. Listed below is a percentage breakdown of the materials
collected in 1990 for all recycling programs. As the pie chart shows, the vast amount of the
mater/al, by weight, was newspaper. Newspaper traditionally makes up the largest amount by
weight of recycling programs overall.
