CASE

SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION COMMUNITY
TREE PLANTING GRANT APPLICATION
By: Bruce F. Bacon, Environmental Specialist

Background:

The City has a small budget for tree planting. Trees are a visible and popular amenity: durable and
increasing in value as they mature. A recent grant pool became available and on remew, the City
planting plan for 1991 fits well with the SBA criteria for awarding grants. Grants are available for
one half of a project cost with a $5,000 maximum grant. We can double the scale of our planting
plan at the Municipal Center Campus, Central Park, River's Bend Park and a neighborhood park.
The grant will cover the cost of ri'ecs and nee spade work by a local landscaper. The City's
matching contribution would be reflected in the time consumed for planting the trees and
subsequent maintenance over a three year period, including adding compost and wood chip mulch.

Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the attached grant application.

Council Action:

Motion to approve/deny submittal of the Small Business Administration Community Tree Planting
Grant application.

Review Checklist:

City Administrator
Environmental Specialist
Zoning Administrator
Finance Officer

CC:07/09/91
