1014
Project Title:
Location:
Contact:
Cost:
Description:
Project Title:
Location:
Contact:
Cost:
Minnesota MRT Route Signage — Phase 2
Various
Carol Zoff, MnDOT
$312,885 (Requesting $35,000)
The Mississippi River Trail (MRT) is the primary nonmotorized alternative transportation
facility in the MISS. This project will complete the effort to sign the entire MRT in
Minnesota by signing the 72-mile MRT segment in the MISS. This will result in
approximately 800 miles of signed bicycle route that follows the Mississippi River in
Minnesota. Combined with the route in nine other river states, this project will allow
bicyclists to confidently explore the Mississippi from the headwaters in Lake Itasca State
Park to the Gulf of Mexico. The route statewide is on existing road shoulders and trails.
Completion of the route signing will benefit MISS visitors, local residents and businesses.
Once completed, MISS visitors can extend their Mississippi River experience throughout
the state with the real opportunity to do so by bicycle. This mode of exploration
provides an intimate relationship with the river, often closer than can be had by car,
especially in the MISS, but also in other Minnesota communities where riverfront trails
exist. Residents can use the MRT for commuting, recreation, exercise, and culture.
Business can benefit from increased visitation resulting from marketing the signed route
as done by the Minnesota Mississippi River Parkway Commission, MRT Inc., Explore
Minnesota Tourism and all of the more than 70 communities that are along the route in
Minnesota. MISS can also benefit from cross promotion by other segments of the MRT
in Minnesota and in the ten states that will encourage travelers and residents to visit
the park. The project is on the MRT and will connect to transit facilities as identified in
the Alternative Transportation Plan and promoted by MISS's rivertripplanner.org. It will
also improve the connection of the MRT to transit, airport, train, and other alternative
modes. This funding is requested for construction in 2014, beginning in approximately
April and continuing through August. The match will be provided by alternative
transportation program funds as designated by MnDOT. MnDOT, in partnership with the
Minnesota Mississippi River Parkway Commission, will continue to partner with MISS to
develop, sign, market, and manage the MRT in Minnesota.
Fabricate Floor Maps
Portable
Susan Overson (NPS), Tim Motzko (SMM)
$30,000
January 29, 2014 — Page 3
