In response to questions of the Council, Mr. Trappen stated he has a design background and
works in designing of mechanical fixtures, works independently and creatively, enjoys problem
solving, also acts as document control coordinator, which requires organizational skills. He
stated he is also a web site designer and thinks the City's website was well designed but the front
page could include the Council's mission statement and pictures of The COR to excite residents.
Mr. Trappen stated parks and the amphitheater are great and create community but there could be
improvements made to the farmer's market to draw more vendors.
Mr. Trappen stated he thinks the role of the Park and Recreation Commission is to consider what
the community is saying and to make recommendations to the City Council relating to what is
observed. He noted with his background and attention to detail /organization, he thinks he can
offer help and bring good ideas to the Council.
Mr. Trappen stated he thinks the most important accomplishment of Ramsey in the past five
years, relating to parks, is The Draw as it brings people together. He also supported doing
something with Lake Ramsey to bring in more community and better living for residents. If
appointed, he would like to focus on bicycle trails to address connectivity throughout the trail
system.
Mr. Trappen reiterated he is a very detailed and organized person, which he thinks would be an
asset to the Park and Recreation Commission. He asked what the major goal is for the Council
in 2014.
Mayor Strommen explained the Council's work in creating a three to five year Strategic Plan that
included imperatives /goals around which activity will be focused.
Councilmember Backous stated the mission statement is posted to the City's home page;
however, it rotates with other messages and is not always evident.
Mayor Strommen stated the Council goes back to the Strategic Plan for guidance when making
decisions, which also contains benchmarks so progress can be measured. She stated one of the
elements is "a connected community" to address both roads and trails.
Human Resources Manager Lasher stated that concludes the formal interview and the Council
will now hold discussion, make decisions, and the names will be brought forward at the March
25, 2014, meeting with service starting in April of 2014. It was noted that Robert Sjoberg is very
interested in serving and submitted an application; however, is unable to attend interviews
tonight due to a long - standing previous commitment.
Councilmember Kuzma spoke in support of appointing Mr. Trappen as his organizational skills
would be an assets as well as his grasp for detail.
Councilmember Johns concurred and noted that Mr. Trappen also has a sense of larger needs that
could be improved.
City Council Work Session / March 11, 2014
Page 2 of 9
