of Natural Resources staff have indicated that future well construction will need to be
coordinated with the overall water use of the area, and the pressure put on the Ironton -Galesville
aquifer to meet the region's water demands. Consideration of use of surface water sources, such
as the Mississippi River, will need to be addressed. This is discussed in further detail in Section
5- Water Supply and Treatment.
TABLE 3.4
CITY OF RAMSEY, MINNESOTA
PROJECTED WATER SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS
Year
Average Day
Demand (mgd)
Maximum Day
Demand (mgd)
Total Wells
Required***
Firm
Capacity*
Total
Capacity**
2004
1.69
5.90
6
4.494
6.234
2009
3.89
11.68
12
10.614
12.354
2014
4.93
14.80
15
13.674
15.414
2020
6.18
18.55
19
17.754
19.494
*Existing Firm Capacity is 3.474 mgd
** Existing Peak Capacity 5.214 mgd (5 existing wells)
***Assumes new well capacities 1.02 mgd (850 gpm)
C. WATER TREATMENT
1. Existing Water Treatment Facilities
Water treatment for the City of Ramsey consists of chlorination, fluoridation and
polyphosphate addition at each pump house. Chlorine is added as a preventive
measure. Chlorine acts as a disinfectant, and works to prevent the growth of
harmful bacteria within the distribution system should contamination occur.
Fluoride is added for the purpose of reducing tooth decay as prescribed by the
State of Minnesota. The addition of polyphosphates accomplishes two things.
Primarily, polyphosphates prevent the iron in the water from precipitation causing
staining problems. However, they are not as effective in preventing manganese
staining. Secondary, polyphosphates reduce the corrosion potential of the water,
thus prolonging the life of copper pipes in homes.
2. Water Treatment Infrastructure Needs
All current water sources for the City of Ramsey exceed recommended levels for
Iron and Manganese. As the city's population continues to grow, it is anticipated
City of Ramsey, Minnesota — M21.34343 Page 3-5
Water System Study Prepared by Bolton & Menk, Inc.
