But site selection in Uptown was <br />even more sermitive in that demolition of <br />viable businesies or homes was not an <br />option and a strateDcally placed vacant <br />fire station was not available. Mter con- <br />ducting an m~tial design to pnontmc the <br />goals of the Uptown area and reviewing <br />the transit requirements of Metro Trarmit, <br />~A Design determined potential tranmt <br />stauon sites. There iq a mil line run_ning <br />through Uptown that iq d~ignated as a <br />future busway/light-rafl track, and an <br />adjacent ~eenway that will be used as a <br />trolley line. Thc transit station ne,'ded to <br />be located where it could accommodate <br />current transit needs and these future <br />transit improvements. Lack of vacant land <br />Wkhin these confines required the typical <br />transit station design to be rethought. A <br />goal of the design was to keep an}, prop- <br />erty acqummon to a minimum. <br /> Hennepin Avenue is a major street <br />connecting Uptown to downtown <br />Minneapotls.
