Oak Wilt Cost Share Practices

Introduction

Active oak wilt control revolves around two actMties: (1) suppression of the disease at active
infection centers and (2) elimination of spores likeh' to generate new infection centers
outside of exdstmg infection centers. The following outlines nvo practices that are intended
to cieal with oak wilt by (2) lowering the incidence of the disease by mechanically sevenng
root grafts and (2) eliminate the abili~, of the disease to form new infection centers by
eliminating spore producing trees (SPT). In ~eneral, it is designed to assist property, o~mers
through their local communi~', with priorib, being given to communities with approved plans.
However, landowmers may be directh, assismd by DNR-ForestU' if they own a lark~er area
( > 3 acres), if the area to be protected is greater than three acres regardless of ownership,
or if they live in an area with a low inciclence of the disease.

P] Suppression of Infection Centers

THE PURPOSE of this practice is to enhance the environment by protecting oak
trees adjacent to an exfisting infection pocket and thereby conserving aesthetic and
property values, habitat, tax base, and produc: values.

APPLY this practice to (1) desi~cnated communities (counp,.,, cit3,, or townships) that
have active oak-.vilt disease and that have prepared a control plan, (2) private
ownerships over 3 acres under the supervision of the local DNR forester, (3) in areas
with a low incidence of the disease and under the supervision of the local DNR
Forester, or (4) where the area- protected is greater than 3 acres regardless of
ownership.

C. POLICIES for this practice are as follows:

a)

In organized communities, a communiw oak w/it plan must be in place unless
the acreage treated or protected is large ( > 3 acres) or the community, has
only a few oak vdh infection centers.

b)

In communities, the proposed practice must be consistent w/th the
commuhi~,'s plan.

Cost shat/rig is author/zed for treating infection centers. This would include
the follovdng work:

locating of infection centerp~.~m,.t~r'~,-' ~ '~
locating of root graft barriers
installation of root graft barriers
o,.s:-t~ ~a~m,.n~ monitoring of treatmeni emcacv
