CASE #

~AI~, FHORIZATION ~OR ARBOR MONTH ACTIVITIES,
~ TREE SALE AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSITION
~ ~ (or the Thousand Points of Shade Case)
~ ' By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Coordinator
Backgroundi

For many yo~s th~ City of Ramsey has sponsored a ri'ce sale for its residents. This successful
program has l~'O~a~ to include an Environmental Exposition that began in 1989. The Expo's
mission is toiPrfr, ovi~.e an information exchange between environmentally oriented local businesses,
agencies and/r~sidd~nts of Ramsey.
City Staff is re tue~ting authorization to proceed with Arbor Month activities and Environmental
Exposition pli ani0g similar to last year, including a modification of the student tree seedling
endowment an. 1 sUIpstituting Environmental Education in place of the educational entertainer hired
last year.

The Ramsey E [e tary School pupil "Tree Endowment" was proposed to be budgeted for $500; a
total of $1,000 -exigts within the operating supplies 5612 cost center.

The Plan:

This year Staff ~rO~oses only purchasing trees for fourth grade students; 180 pupils instead of all
of the 800 stud ,ntsisupplied with trees last year. The City would purchase 180 prepackaged River
Birch trees at .45 ~ach for a total cost of $81.00.

180 River Birch Trees @ $.45 = $81.00

The proposed I~nvi~:onmental Education Program would be a Naturalist led activity held during the
Expo. The se~ior) are generally an hour and a half in length and the Naturalist's bring their own
snakes and sp~er~ The projected cost would be $30 to $40 per session. It is suggested that a
few sessions ~be :~ m back to back so that different young people can participate in this
environmental ~duc ~tional activity while their parents purchase trees or socialize and learn.
If we were to,conduct three sessions at $40 each, that would be $120. This Environmental
Education Pro~an~ could come from the 5612 supplies budget but perhaps more appropriately
from the Landt~lll T!pping Fee Fund - restricted portion.
3 14gtur~ist-led environmental ed sessions estimated @ $40.00/each = $120
This year the ~ty i~ fortunate to have assistance from the citizen's tree committee. The committee
has a wide v_~.~ety iof environmental interests. For March and April, a group of the committee
members will i~ r~eting each Wednesday to assist with organizing the Expo and Arbor events. In
order to facilita~e effective communication between committee participants and to reach out for new
members, bot~ forIArbor events and to encourage continued citizen involvement, postage is a
necessity. It iSi~sug~ested that up to $200 be appropriated for this citizen's committee also from the
Landfill TipPi~!g Flee Fund - restricted portion. Once this committee demonstrates continued
viability, there ~may ibe external operating funds available.

i ~ Postage request from citizen's tree committee = $200

r ~
