By:

BUSINESS EXPO
James Gromberg, Project Manager

CASE #2

Background:

Once agam,~he. Economic Development Commission will be planning the City-sponsored
Business EXPO. !As with all successful City events, there is a certain amount of planning that
needs to take ~lae~ to provide for the smooth and effective functioning of events. At this time, the
EDC needs t~pr0q:eed with certain actions with regard to the Business EXPO:

1. Set a date for the Business EXPO.
2. Arrange for a chmrperson(s) to coordinate the planning of the event.
3. Dev¢lbP ~specific time line for the completion of certain components of the
Business EXPO.
Last year C~lyn ~elson functioned very effectively as the chairperson for the Business EXPO.
Observations:

This year, sin~e Carolyn Nelson is spending more of her time in her new job, it is recommended
that she be appoit~ed as co-chairperson of the 1992 Business EXPO and that another member of
the EDC also be appointed as co-chairperson.
As for the d&te of the 1992 Business EXPO, I would recommend that it be held on either
September 2~; 19,92 or September 27, 1992 depending upon the scheduling of Vikings football
games. We h!tve, i[ound that attendance is better at the Business EXPO when there is no Vikings
football gamei
The EDC sh.°4fld la!so be reviewing costs associated with the Business EXPO and, after developing
a budget outli0e t ~r the EXPO, should proceed to the City Council and request funds to defray the
costs of the e~ent [This should not be a major concern, as Council has tentatively budgeted money
for the 1992 B,.us! 6,ess EXPO in the EDC budget. However, to prevent any misunderstandings, it
would be bes~ if ;he EDC formally requests the funds. It should be noted that last year, of the
funds receive~l f' dm the City, the EDC returned over $1,400 to be reassigned to other events
and/or expenses.
RecommendatiOns:
It is my reco~meOdation that the EDC consult a calendar and set a date for the 1992 Business
EXPO. A ch~.'rPe~son(s) should be elected for this event and a meeting should be scheduled for
the chairpersoO(s) and all interested Commission members to begin planning.

Reviewed bY:

Project Managgr i
City Adminis ,trator

EDC:06/10/92,

2

h .[ ,t
