August lO, ~991

Si yvi ~:

August Et, ~I, the Ramsey Fire Department was dispatched to Danny"s
Ai umi num due to the busi ness "burnl ng copper". Upon arrivai, I meet
the p~iice souad which was already at the intersection of Basalt.
D~icer Kuhn's and myself proceeded to the si~e entmance where we were
unable t~ gain a~es~ due t~ a locked gate. We ~ontinued t~ the
~utside ~en~ed gate wheme we were able to visually noti~e that an
employee was bringing molten matemiai ~rom the building and allowing
it to cool outsi~e. I was positioned upwind and was not able to
~ete~t and odor at that time. When the Asst. Chie~ ammived, the
police o~imer cleared an~ returned to his vehicle. The Asst. Chief
and mysel~ were escorted into Danny's Aluminum by the same employee
who had been seen removing the glowing material. We examined the
material up close and di~ not ~ind any eviOence o~ "~opper" or
Polyvinyi Chloride (PVC) insulated materials. The night foreman
~oined us and we proceeded to his o+~ice where he had spoken to Danny
and informed me that he woulO like ~or mysel4 to call him before I had
l e~t his business. ~ phoned Danny, however his wi~e indicated that he
had already ie~t and wouiO be doining us very shortly. The Asst.
Chie~ and mysel~ ~aited out in his parking lot ~or approximately ]0 -
15 minutes untill Danny arrived. We discussed that the smoke we had
noticed was white and that the mmteri~l was glowing red when it was
being brought out to cool. He explained his complete process as weli
ms the differences in the ~olor o~ the smoke that his ovens emit. He
informed us that he would be adding m~ter-burners and eliminating his
current "bag house". Our discussion lasted appro~:immte]y two and one
hal~ hours. It is of my opinion, that in this particular instance, I
could not i denti~y any smoke bei no di s~harged ~rom Danny' s A1 umi hum
that would be different than ~hat which would have been discharged
during normal day to day operations. I ~eel that better lighting in
that general business area could possibly eliminate any nuisance calls
~or both police and ~ire to Danny's Aluminum.

David Gri~in
Ramsey Fire Chie~
