Emerald Ash Borer in MN
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive insect
from Asia that was first discovered in Detroit in
2002 and subsequently confirmed in Minnesota in
2009. While EAB has not been found in the City
of Ramsey or Anoka County as of yet, it has been
confirmed in Shoreview, which is very close to the
southern boundary of Anoka County. This insect
could have a devastating impact on the ash trees
throughout the state, as it attacks all three (3) native
ash species in Minnesota (white, green and black
ash).
Adult insects are slender, bronze or golden
green with dark metallic green wings, and about 1 /4
to 1h inch in length. However, it is the larval stage
that causes the serious damage. The larvae can be
up to 1 -1 inches long, are cream colored with a
brown head.
The feeding of the larvae occurs just underneath
the bark of trees, making early detection rather diffi-
cult. When the adult insect emerges from the tree, it
leaves a D - shaped exit hole, another sign indicating
potential EAB activity.
As a result, one of the primary indicators for early de-
tection is heavy woodpecker damage, followed by canopy
dieback over several years. Springtime, before trees leaf
out, is the best time to assess ash trees for signs of pos-
sible EAB activity. Not only is there a clear view of the
entire trunk and branches, this also coincides with when
woodpeckers are more actively seeking food leading into
their mating season.
If you notice heavy woodpecker activity or notice
significant canopy dieback in an ash tree, or if you have
other general concerns about your ash tree(s), please
contact City Planner Chris Anderson at 763 - 433 -9817
or cnderson@cityoframsey.com.
Detecting this pest early is the best defense against
a major infestation that could have dramatic impacts
on your landscape and the
greater community for-
est.
