I ,think you make a very persuasive case for this
project.

As you may recall, I w?rked with then-Congressman John
Blatnik to secure fundzng for the Seventh Avenue grade
separation. I am, thus, familiar with the area in question
and very sensitive to the need for the bridge and especially
to its public safety aspects. I would like to help with this
project in any way I can.

At the moment, however, there ~s no legislation to which we
could attach a bridge authorization. The Public Works and
Transportation Committee, which has jurisdiction over the
Federal-Aid Highway Program, reported out, and Congress
passed, the very major Surface Transportation Assistance Act
late last year and has no plans for an highway bill
extensive'
this ~ear. Thus, I can offer you no i~ediate hope, but
certainly will keep the Rum River Bridge in mind and the
Study on file for the first op~rtunity, ~ssibly next
year,
when 'the Committee again %akes up the subject of highway
~ Sincerely,

I I I I-i I.; J%mes L.
