Water main
flushing is a crucial element in the main-
tenance of our drinking water system. Iron and manganese
are naturally occurring elements in water and will settle out
if water is allowed to stand for any amount of time. In the
winter months when water consumption is low, the miner-
als tend to drop out of suspension in the water and build up
on the bottom of the water main.
In the summer months when water usage is high, the
iron and manganese are stirred up and give the water com-
ing out of your tap a reddish color. The water is perfectly
safe to drink but will stain clothes in your wash if the
concentration is high enough. To diminish this problem,
City crews open hydrants to rapidly accelerate the water
and flush the minerals off the bottom of the pipe and out of
the system. Another way to remove these minerals, which is
not available to us at this time, would be to process our wa-
ter supply through a filtration plant before it's introduced
into the system.
Once the minerals are flushed out and water use in-
creases over the summer, mineral build -up is greatly re-
duced. Other maintenance advantages of water main flush-
ing are that we have a chance to operate a large number of
our valves and all the hydrants in our system. This allows us
to catch any maintenance problems before they advance too
far and become more costly to repair. This entire process is
repeated in the fall to prepare the water system for winter.
For more information on water main flushing or any other
questions you may have on our utility system, please contact
John Nelson, Utilities Supervisor at 763- 433 -9861.
r-j AUTO SALES
&SERVICE
7751 Hwy. 10 • Ramsey, MN 55303
Shop: 763 - 422 -0400
Auto Sales: 763 - 422 -1100 • Hours: M -F: 8:30am -6pm
------------------------------------------------ - - - - --
10% OFF ALL SERVICE
Not valid with any other offers • September 1, 2015
---------------------------------------------------- •
