MEMORANDUM

DATE:

CC:

FROM:

RE:

1;ebruary 17, 1993

All City Staff

City Council

Ryan Schroeder, City Administrator

Smoking Policy

As many of you are already aware, at the last City Council meeting, the City Council d.iscussed
expanding the existing smoking policy. Currently, smoking is not allowed in any parks or public
works facility. At City Hall, smoking is allowed in the senior citizen's lunchroom and after hours
in the main floor mall. Further, it is my understanding that smoking is currently allowed within
City vehicles. The propos~l that has been put forth is to ban smoking, probably effective about
mid-year within all City facilities and vehicles as well as on all City property. This would include
the grounds surrounding City Hall, public buildings, the Park Center building and all municipal
parks. This will again be taken up by the City Council on Tuesday, February 23, 1993.

City Council is interested in providing Staff members the opportunity to have input on this issue.
Council would like to know whether you think this is a good or bad idea, if you have any ideas for
implementation or phasing thereof and any ideas for related issues such as smoking cessation
programs, etc.

Given the above, please contact me or Personnel Coordinator Kay McAloney with your views on
the above subject. Thank you for your input.

]ccr

/?¢
