City Engineer Jankowski explained the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control provides guidance
for the posting of stop signs. By virtue of the amount of traffic on McKinley Street, placement
of a stop sign on the north leg of this intersection (Unity Street) could be considered to meet the
condition of a street entering a through street or highway. In addition a supporting consideration
is also present in the limited sight distance available to the approaching traffic from the east.
This limited sight distance is a factor for southbound traffic turning in either direction on
McKinley Street conflicting with westbound McKinley Street. It might also be noted that
McKinley Street is proposed for eventual extension into the City of Anoka by providing a
connecting link to Thurston Street. Traffic volumes could be expected to increase significantly
when this occurs. Staff recommends the posting of a stop sign on the north leg of the
intersection of McKinley and Unity Street.

Motion to recommend that the City Council authorize the posting of a stop sign on the north leg
of the intersection of McKinley and unity Street.

Action:

Ratify the recommendation of the Public Works Committee.

Reviewed by:
Assistant Public Works Director

CC: 04/13/04
