CITY OF RAMSEY APPLICATION <br /> <br />Atexandra House, Inc. is a non-profit tax exempt community based organization <br />founded in 1980 by the Anoka County Task Force on Battered Women. The Task Force <br />was formed in 1977 by community people who were concerned about the needs of <br />battered women and their children/youth. <br /> <br />In 1978, the Task Force established a crisis intervention phone line to provide <br />support, information and referral. The overwhelming need expressed by women who <br />were calling is emergency shelter. <br /> <br />Our mission is to break the generational cycle of violence by providing safe <br />temporary shelter, crisis intervention, individual and group advocacy, education <br />for battered women and their children/youth and community education. <br /> <br />The following services are designed to meet these goals: <br /> <br />* 24 hour crisis intervention line <br />* Systems advocacy <br />* Support groups for women, children, youth; <br />* Education and in-services, workshops and training; <br />* Hospital advocacy services at Health One Unity and Mercy; <br />* Legal clinic; <br /> Volunteer involvement; <br />* Intervention services in the cities of Blaine, Circle <br /> Pines/Lexington and Fridley; <br />* Children/youth advocacy, education and support. <br /> <br />Our programs have developed over the years to respond both to the diverse needs <br />of families involved in domestic violence, and to the areas in the community <br />which can help or hinder the problem. <br /> <br />SERVICE DESCRIPTIONS <br /> <br />WOMEN'S PROGRAM: Designed to respond to the immediate needs of battered women <br />as well as initiate information and systems change with a focus in Anoka County. <br />Services include crisis intervention, support, education, direct service advocacy <br />and referral. The Women's Program maintains a strong commitment service level <br />for both shelter and community women. Three weekly support groups (one in <br />shelter and two in the Anoka County community), transportation, accompaniment to <br />court, general advocacy (legal/welfare/housing) and legal clinic services respond <br />to the diverse needs of battered women. <br /> <br />CHILDREN/YOUTH PROGRAM: Designed to minimize the trauma of a child/youth <br />experiences as a result of domestic violence'lin their lives. Services include <br />support education groups for residents and community children/youth age 4 and <br />over on the topics of family violence, physical and sexual abuse prevention, <br />parent education, direct service advocacy; i.e. legal and child protection, <br />elementary and secondary school training and presentations using curricula on <br />violence prevention.
