RESOLUTION ON DEAD-END STREETS

It is clearly the intent of the subdivision ordinance that dead-
end streets over 600 feet in length shall not be allowed on a
permanent basis. It is also clearly the intent of the ordinance
that dead-end streets of indeterminate length be created on a
temporary basis. ~

The question at hand is how long can the temporary dead-end street
be and for how long a time?

The costs of providing services to those lots receiving access
from the street in question would seem to be a suitable measure of
"community requirements: as used in Section 8.Ola of the Subdivi-
sion Ordinance. Costs of services such as police protection and
school bus transportation are much higher when only a long round-
about route is available. Road maintenance costs are higher if
the length of township roads are more than normal for the number
of lots involved.

Guidelines are as follows:

1. The average length of road per lot in the subdivision shall
not exceed 275' length in A-1 and C-1 zones or l&O' length in R-1.

2. Access from the dead-end shall be fairly direct to the town-
ship road system so that an unusual amount of travel is not re-
quired for service behicles to reach the subdivision area. An
appropriate ~est of this'is where there is a reasonable opportun-
ity for selection of one of two or more alternatives, the most
economical route from the standpoint of public services shall be
provided.

dead-end larger than 600 feet shall not be permitted.
