Cotmci hncmbcr Cook asked if the applicant would consider a compromise of smaller ornamental
trees that cio not get a lot of height.

Mr. Muschil( responded once the trees get big something may happen to the cars.

Counci hnember Kurak asked what type of sl~ub they are recommending.

Gina replied there will be lilacs around the sidewalk in front of the building. The landscaper has
suggested something like a burning bush by the drainage ditch.

Councihnember Kurak requested input from staff.

Associate Planner Geisler replied staff recornmends more trees on the property line.

Councilmember Strommen stated she has seen parking lots with trees so there must be something
appropriate tbra parking area.

Counci hnember Cook commented there are trees that do not sap, and also trees that would take
30 years before the canopy comes close to the line.

Mayor Gamec asked how lnany trees are being recommended.

Associate Planner Geisler replied the plan the applicants submitted had ten trees, the requirement
is 21 trees, and staff is recommending a compromise of 17 trees.

Mayor Gamec commented there will be another building right next to this site that will likely
come up to the lot line. At that point they would have to cut the trees down. It would likely be
better to put in bushes.

Councihnember Pearson asked how far it is from the lot line to the curb.

Associate Planner Geisler replied the distance is ten feet.

Cotmcihnembcr Cool( commented shrubs would also go onto the neighboring property.

Councilmembcr Strommen stated she would hate to lose all the height of the trees and the site
would look bare with shrubs. Staff has looked at this and feels there is adequate room for trees.
There may be another happy medium with smaller species that do not sap, and the rest of the
landscaping could include shrubs.

Motion by Councihnember Cook, seconded by Councilmember Zimmerman, to grant approval of
staff's recommendation that seven additional trees be placed on the northern property line of
Precision Mctalcraft.

City Council/April 27, 2004
