Regular Meeting
april 25, 1977
Page .5

would require such an amount of time to either remove the dogs or relocate.
Instead, it was discussed if they should be granted a conditional use permit
and not the practicalities of what would happen if the permit was not
grante~.

Mr. Geurwitz said they were asking that the Van Odegaards be allowed to
remain in their present location with their dogs until September 15, 1977.
They will hurry up moving as quickly as possible. They could possible be
out before that time if they can find buyers etc. He said that to say they
have only 90 days to do this is a bit short on time. The dogs have been in
there for 2-1~2 years. To say now that they can stay 90 days and no longer,
when they are asking for only an additional 1-1/2 months.

George Merely st~od up and read a letter from the Greiners, next door
n~ighbor to the Van Odegaar~s. It said they felt the Van Odegaards should
not be granted more than 30 days. They are trying to sell their house, but
the realtor wants no more open house because of the dogs howling.

Mr. Merely stated that the Van Odegaards are in violation of the city
sanitary laws. He asked that Anoka Sanitary Department check into this
to see if there is any pollution of water because of dog waste.

He also stated that he had proof that they operate a professional kennel
and are in violation of a law. Ne read from a magazine in which an ad
for Karlan D Kennel, giving the address of Van Odegaards, was published.

John Tillery, 12775 Florine St., was happy to hear the permit was denied
at the hearing. Ne thinks 90 days is carrying it too far and that 30
days would be a better recommendation.

Mrs. Van Odegaard said they asked the Greiners many times if they objected
to the dogs and they always said no. She said dogs got out once and got
into Greiners garden and Mrs. Van Odegaard o~fered to pay to have someone
redo the garden, but Greiners said no. Van Odegaards paid $15.00 for one
little white rabbit the dogs got. Mrs. Van Odegaard said the only other
thing they did was to buy several rabbits from them to help out Greiner's
SOn ·

In reference to the ad Mr. Green read, Mrs. Van Odegaard said it is not a
listing of a commercial kennel. They are members of the Minnesota Dog Assn.
which does not allow them to be a commercial kennel. They are also listed
with every vet so that a~ene who wants a goed~ well-bred~ healthy dog, can
get one. The Van Odegaards hope to make a reputation for themselves as
good hobby breeders.

Mrs. Van Odegaard said the chemicals they put into the ground are not harmful.
She said that beer poured on the ground wc~ld put more chemicals in the
ground than theirs does. She also said that one of her neighbors who was
at the hearing will verify that Mr. Merely lied at the hearing. She also
said that Mr. Greiner signed a petition saying he was not opposed to the
dogs in the neighborhood.
