I ! i I WASTE MANAGEMENT BOARD FACT SHEET RAMSEY Designation: Transfer/Storage, chemical treatment, incineration Area size: 1280 acres (approximately 2 square miles) Existing industrial development: The industrial area in Ramsey is largely undeveloped. The area contains~the Gateway North Airport, a concrete manufacturer, Minnesota Sawdust and Shavings, Renner and Sons well contractors, punch and dye and several other operations. Directly to the north of the area is the Waste Management Incorporated Anoka Landfill. Near this landfill area is a candidate sanitary landfill site submitted by Anoka County to the Metropolitan County. The landfill area has been certified by PCA as intrinsic- ally suitable for a solid waste landfill. Proposed industrial development: The area'is zoned industrial. City plans show Continued use of this area for in- dustry. Availability of sewer: Sewer lines from the Anoka Treatment Plant have'been extended to the Ramsey City boundaries this past summer. Interceptors are under construction and should be avail- able to accept waste by May 1983. The City has proposed to provide sanitary sewer service to the area bounded by Industrial Avenue and the Gateway Industrial Airport on the north and by Ramsey Blvd. on the west in 1983 or 1984. The area is on the Mississippi which could be used as a receiving stream for discharge from bn-site treatment'facilities. However, since Ramsey is upstream from the metropolitan area discharge to the river may be restricted. Transportation access: The area has d~rect access from THIO (a principal arterial) on the south side. This segment of TH lO has an accident rate below the statewide average. The area is also served by the Burlington Northern Railroad. Proximity to residential development: Residential development on fairly large lots is located to the north and east of the area. There are a few scattered homes within the industrial area along Ramsey Blvd. The industrial area, however, is large and mostly .. 'undeveloped and there would be opportunity to buffer development from residential areas. Soil and aquifer conditions: Soi'ls The site contains no areas of clayey soils. Most of the site has soil of the Hubbard Series which contains mostly coarse sand. Consequently soils in the area do not. provide natural protection over that designed into a facility. Subsurface- Existin§ water-well records ~indicate bedrock aquifers are used for supply in this area with few exceptions. The bedrock surface of the St. Lawrence Formation
