Case #2: Consider Authorization to Hire a Public Works Maintenance Worker

Human Resources Manager Reed stated this case needs to be pulled, as Mr. Moen has contacted
thc City to state he cannot accept the position. It can be replaced with the consideration to hire
another Public Works Maintenance Worker, Michael Berge. This will leave one Public Works
Maintenance Worker position open. Human Resources Reed explained in February 2004, the
Public Works Maintenance position was advertised. Approximately 90 applications were
received and a total of fourteen candidates were interviewed. Based on the interview panel's
review, staff is recommending that Michael Berge be hired for the Public Works Maintenance
Worker position at a starting wage of $16.03/hr, plus benefits. Mr. Berge's appointment is
contingent upon successful completion of criminal background and reference checks and passing
a pre-employment physical and drug screen. With Council approval, Mr. Berge's start date will
be on or near June 1, 2004.

Motion by Mayor Gamec, seconded by Councilmember Pearson, to recommend Michael Berge
fbr the position of full-time Public Works Maintenance Worker at a starting wage of $16.03/hr,
plus benefits contingent upon successful completion of criminal background and reference
checks, a pre-employment physical, and a drug screen.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Chairperson Cook, Mayor Gamec and Councilmember Pearson.
Voting No: None.

Further discussion: Chairperson Cook asked if there is a list that can be used to determine the
next choice in the candidates that were interviewed for the remaining open position. Human
Resources Manager Reed replied the interviewing panel will have to reconvene to make sure they
have agreement on the next choice for the open position.

COMMITTEE INPUT

Nolle.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Mayor Gamec, seconded by Councilmember Pearson, to adjourn the regular meeting
of thc Personnel Committee.

Thc regular meeting of the Personnel Committee adjourned at 6:40 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol Hamer
Recording Secretary
TimeSaver Off ,S'ite Secretarial, Inc.

Givonna Reed
Human Resources Manager

Personnel Committee/May 11, 2004
