Box 665 2665 Fourth Avenue North Anoka, Minnesota 55303 612/427-5860

January 15, 1979

Mr. J. Stephen Schmidt
301 Jackson Street
Anoka, Minnesota
55303

Re: Soil Borings at Weiss Property
File: 521.01

Dear Mr. Schmidt:

At your request, additional soil borings were made at the Weiss property south-
west of the intersection of 167th Avenue N. W. and State Highway No. 47, Ramsey,
Minnesota. The purpose of the work was to supplement the soils report submitted
earlier to Mr. Paul Weiss. With the permission of Mr. Weiss, enclosed is a copy
of that report dated November 10, 1977.

Four new testholes were made numbered 101 through 104. Logs of these testholes
are attached. The new testholes verify the pattern of 4 to 5 feet of fine sand
material over silty clay. At most testholes, ground water was found perched in
the sand above the clay. An exception was Testhole No. 101 where water was first
encountered in a sand layer located below 7 feet of the clay.

Mottled soil coloration in the sand materials above the clay indicate that seasonal
high ground water can be within 3 to 3 1/2 feet of the surface. At some of the
testholes the upper surface of the clay was found to be tan or brown, indicating
that during some dry seasons the extent of the perched water is reduced.

Based upon standard penetration testing, the sand materials above the clay are
predicted to have an allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 pounds per square
foot. The clay soils are capable of about 2,000 pounds per square foot soil
bearing capacity or greater depending upon depth. The site appears, therefore,
to be suitable for construction of slab on grade type of structures. Until the
area can be drained by storm sewer improvements, we do not advise construction
of basements because of the ground water.

civil · municipal · planning · soils , land surveying
