IJ

I
I
I

M~NNESOTA VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE

PROPOSED RABIES VACCINATION CLINIC GUIDELINES

AUGUST 1981

I1.

Introduction

I
I
I
I
I
I

I
I

I
I
I

When a high percentage of the dog and cat population is effectively
vaccinated against rabies, there is a protective barrier created
between the wildlife reservoir and the susceptible human populations.
The main reason for holding rabies vaccination clinics then is for
protection of public health. These guidelines.are suggested for
use when a rabies vaccination clinic request is initiated by the
community.

b$

The veterinarians practicing within a community should be the ones
responsible for holding the vaccination clinic unless for some reason
they .are not interested. .

The veterinarian should supply the vaccine, all supplies for giving
the vaccine, animal holders and be responsible for giving the
vaccine.

The veterinarian maintains responsibility for vaccine regardless
of where the clinic is held.

e. Only rabies vaccinations will be given at city vaccination clinics.

Animal Identification

Communities should require identification of each animal. This may
be provided by license and/or a tag. If tags are dispensed, the
community should provide the tags with the following information:
a. Cit~ name clinic - e.g. Yourtown Rabies Clinic
b. City rabies authority phone number '

c. Serially numbered tags .
d. Refrain from using unmarked or vaccine producers tags

Certificates

a. Certificates used should inc].ude the type of vaccine used and the
date revaccination is due. Certificates should not contain the name of the
veterinarian's hospital, but rather the name and phone number of the community
rabies authority. Use of the Certificates as recommended in the Current
Compendium of Animal Rabies Vaccines of the National Association of Public
Health is encouraged (JAVMAJan 1, 1981, p 16-17)
