VarY~ation certificates should be properly filed and retained by <br /> the city rabies authority. This should be understood prior to the <br /> beginning of the clinic. These documents may have to be verified <br /> sometime in the future in case of a h,,mmn bite. Thi~, responsibility~ <br /> is properly the city's. The importance of these records cannot be over <br /> stated. This is the reason that the city's rabies authority name <br /> and phone number be on the tags dispensed at the clinic. <br /> <br /> c. The veterinarian may wish to keep a file copy of all animals vaccinated. <br /> <br />Duration of ~mmunity: <br /> a. Recommend to the city that the most current compendium be the <br /> guideline. <br /> b. Duration of immunity should be agreed upon prior to the beginning <br /> of the clinic. <br /> c. May need to conform to city codes. <br /> d. The number of clinics per year in a community may be variable. In general <br /> one per year should be adequate; two may be necessary in some cases. <br /> <br />Epidemiology <br /> <br /> a. Rabies is spread primarily by bite wounds from infected animals.~ <br /> b. We recommend that all dogs and cats be vaccinated. <br /> c. City Rabies Co. ntrol Authority shoed strive for 100% of the DOGS A/qD CATS <br /> ! in the community to be Vaccinated, ~ '. <br /> <br /> d. Evaluate the needs for rabies vaccination clinics based upon the ' <br /> prevalence of rabies, Also bring out what. vector and reservoir animals <br /> are involved. The community officials may wish to contact the Minnesota <br /> Board of Animal Health, the U. S. Public Health Service, the Minnesota <br /> Department of Health or the College of Veterinary Medicine section of <br /> Ep id emio lo gy. <br /> <br />Potential Liabilities <br /> a. Hazards which may be encountered at community vaccination clinics. <br /> include: ' <br /> <br /> - Dog bites to humans <br /> - Dog and cat fights or dog to dog fights <br /> - Accidential innoculation of holders or owners <br /> - Lost dogs or cats . <br /> - Anaphylactic reactions <br /> -.Animal injury due to handling or mishandling <br /> - Cat scratches <br /> b. These hazards may be increased by an uncon~611ed environment. <br /> c. City should check liability insurance coverage to insure protection <br /> against these potential'hazards. <br /> <br />Identification of an{mmls should be required. <br /> a. Licenses could besold and their purchase encouraged at the clinic. <br /> This would be left to the discretion of the city and if done should be <br /> handled by city personnel <br /> <br /> <br />
