City Planner Anderson indicated while the City has had multiple inquires, there has only been
one (1) formal submittal received and reviewed by Staff. After consulting with both the City
Attorney and the Police Chief, it was determined that the proposed home occupation did not
exceed the threshold that required a permit. It is unclear if the recent inquiries are truly a sign of
a developing trend or just a coincidence that they were within months (or weeks) of one another.
Staff is not suggesting nor recommending that any revisions to the Home Occupation standards
are needed; however, we did think it was worth updating the Planning Commission in case
additional, similar inquiries are received.
Commission Business
Commissioner Bauer asked if staff questioned the applicants if there was a growing demand in
this market.
City Planner Anderson reported he did not ask the applicants this question. He explained two of
the inquiries were within two weeks of each other and the third was a month prior.
Commissioner Brauer indicated he read an article recently and believed this was a national trend.
He stated gun sales were predicted to continue to rise and this driving force was being
investigated. He suspected that the City would see more gun sale requests.
Commissioner Bauer asked if the City has had any comments or concerns raised regarding the
new indoor gun range.
Community Development Director Gladhill indicated the City has not had any major complaints
or concern raised. He noted the gun range and daycare were successfully coexisting.
Chairperson Levine encouraged staff to continue to monitor this topic and report back to the
Planning Commission.
6. COMMISSION / STAFF INPUT
6.01: Receive Staff Update
The Staff Update was noted.
6.02: Zoning Bulletins
Zoning Bulletins were noted.
Planning Commission/February 4, 2016
