Seconded by Ron West, carried 7 - 0.

Fran Otto with the Llt~fln Company, 555 Baker Avenue, Winfsted,
MN. and SteVe Stele fromm Howard Lumber Co. made a presentation on
wood foundations.

Thev had slides showing various orocedures used in constructing
the all wood foundations. They also gave each member a 35 page
booklet showing application of these foundations.

The treatment of lumbe~ that is used is called "wovenized salt
treatment" and southern, yellow oine is usually used because it
is so porous.

wood They estimate from their testing that these foundations should
foundation last about 40 years an~ they are F.H.A. and G.I. approved.
A typical 3 bedroom ra~bter would cost about the same as
conventional concrete B, lock, but a $300 savings would be realized
in a split entry. However, there would be much larger savings
realized when finishin~ off the inside of the basement because
paneling could be apolied directly to walls. Also the insulating
characteristics of all, wood foundations would save on heating bills.
Disadvantages were asked by members of Planning & Zoning but few
were found , possibly ~he %ife span could be one disadvantage.
Ceneral recommendation ito the City Council, it was a concensus
of opinion that wood fSundations are a suitable alternative to
concrete foundation after viewing a presentation by Fran Otto
and are being accepted i bY many State agencies and lending insti-
tutions.

Don Greenberg.
