The second phase the City should consider would be an upgrade of the central processing unit of the computer. Currently the City has a /10 processor. This processor, although not as efficient as a /12, was originally installed in 1984 because of the lower price associated with it. The price of this processor has continued to come down over time and it has been indicated to me that the price of this will probably continue to decline during the rest of this year. The cost of the City purchasing an upgrade of the /12 processor would be $9,272.00. In addition to these upgrades in computer system, it is recommended that the City proceed with the purchase of the PC that was approved in the 1987 budget. The purpose of this computer was to provide stand alone PC spread sheet and data base work and to also allow the PC to be used as a terminal with the 990 business computer. Recommendation: It is recommended that the City proceed with an upgrade of the computer both in terms of storage capacity and processor ability. The first phase should be to purchase the utility billing software and to provide for the additional hardware requirements needed for storage of utility billing and other application records. It is also recommended that in 1988 the City proceed with the upgrade of the /10 processor to a /12 processor. It is also recommended that the City Council indicate approval for Staff to proceed with obtaining price information for purchasing a third Personal Computer to be used as a terminal in conjunction with the Texas Instrument 990. This item was approved in the 1987 budget and will be brought before the Council for final approval before purchase.
