Nowthen Threshing Show
Spending three days at the Nowthen Threshing Show !x
is a significant time commitment, but even more fun!
Volunteers make this event run smoothly and easily as
they professionally handle the chaos of kids with
sticky pennies, talking about 1920 in the first person,
and answering patron questions all while greeting
everyone, smiling, and having a good time
themselves.
A special added feature of this year's show included
an archeology dig led by Dr.Jeremy Nienow.Funded
through a partnership grant,Dr.Nienow dressed as the
1919 archeologist who conducted the actual survey in
Anoka County that year.A field was"salted"with
"artifacts"for kids to find.Dr.Nienow spoke about what archeology was, what it could
teach us,and how it was done before walking the field to look for an"artifact"--flint
napping rock chips painted gold on one side. When the kids found an artifact, they
could bring it to the store and received 10 cents in credit for their"find"as a prize. He
had 67 kids go through the program with him.
Anoka County Fair
Each year, during the days of the Anoka County Fair, the ACHS sets up home at the
Old Farm Place. In a little world set away from the midway, people come to visit an old
school, jail, post office and experience historical fun at the farmhouse.
Fairgoers visit our Fair home to play and reminisce about the past through the old
artifacts in each room, while volunteers stand ready to explain or listen. Sometimes the
conversations last only the time it takes to walk the length of the house, but others
continue on the porch swing,a friendly conversation about history and bygone times.
This year we also unveiled our education boxes for guests to play with and explore. The
Toys and Games Box intrigued and captivated both adults and children. From whimmy-
diddles to a game of Graces, the Fair lets us engage with the past.
 f
10
